Illuminating Heritage: The 50 Martin Place Lighting Transformation
DMX by Microngroup changing the Martin Place Landscape
50 Martin Place is one of Sydney’s most iconic heritage buildings—a structure of significant architectural and civic value, nestled at the heart of the CBD. When tasked with upgrading the building’s external lighting, Micron Group faced a compelling challenge: deliver a cutting-edge architectural lighting solution that celebrated the building’s heritage character, without altering or damaging any part of the protected façade or internal structure.
The Design, A Heritage-Sensitive Lighting Upgrade
Due to strict heritage preservation guidelines, traditional installation methods were ruled out. This meant no rewiring, no structural penetrations, and no wireless interference. Yet the goal was ambitious: to create a dynamic lighting system that could both honour the sandstone façade in warm white and transform the building into a vivid landmark during major events, such as Vivid Sydney.
To achieve this, Micron Group collaborated with Modaluce Australia, leveraging two of their advanced technologies:
The Installation
1. Modaluce 360W High-Efficiency Uplighters
These specialist uplighters were selected for their superior colour fidelity and energy performance. With just 40W power draw in white mode (compared to the building’s previous 150W metal halides), they offered substantial energy savings while providing stunning illumination across the building’s intricate architectural features.
2. Modaluce Powerline Transceivers
A game-changer in heritage environments, these transceivers allowed DMX control signals to be streamed directly over existing power lines, eliminating the need for new cabling or wireless systems. This ensured total compliance with the building’s zero-penetration and zero-wireless policy.
Intelligent Integration Without Compromise
To mount the fittings without impacting the structure, Micron Group engineered custom concrete plinths which housed the fixtures and securely anchored them without drilling or fixing into the sandstone itself. This ensured that the lighting design remained completely reversible, in line with conservation standards.
From a control perspective, Micron deployed a DMX-over-powerline control architecture, using the Modaluce transceivers to distribute signal seamlessly across the network. The entire system was linked to a custom-built Madrix DMX backend, which provided:
- Automated sunrise/sunset operation
- Event-driven colour programming
- Remote diagnostic and scene control
- Integration with Vivid Festival triggers
As a result, 50 Martin Place can now glow in soft architectural white for most of the year, but instantly shift to vibrant colour for events—all without any physical reconfiguration.
Significant Energy and Maintenance Savings
- The project not only transformed the building’s night-time identity but also resulted in significant operational benefits:
- Over 70% energy reduction (from 150W to ~40W per fitting in white mode)
- No maintenance disruption, thanks to the robust transceiver/control system
- Future-proof scalability, with all fittings addressable and networked
Delivered with Expertise
Micron Group technicians worked closely with Modaluce engineers, heritage consultants, and building stakeholders to deliver the project flawlessly. The installation was completed with minimal disruption, no impact to the existing structure, and zero compromise to the building’s visual or functional integrity.
Micron’s solution proved to be not only technically innovative but also architecturally respectful, showcasing how modern lighting technology can elevate a heritage landmark without undermining its legacy.
Lighting the Way Forward
The lighting transformation at 50 Martin Place is a model for heritage-sensitive innovation—blending modern technology, energy-conscious design, and architectural integrity. The success of this project has positioned the building as a beacon within Sydney’s nightscape, reinforcing its prominence both as a heritage asset and a vibrant participant in civic life.
