Power Analysis Case Study – Commercial Building Electrical System Optimisation
Real-world power analysis used to diagnose electrical issues and deliver targeted solutions across commercial building infrastructure.
Micron Group regularly uses power analysis to identify and resolve complex electrical issues in commercial buildings across Sydney. By capturing real-time electrical data, our team can diagnose underlying problems that are not immediately visible and implement targeted, high-performance solutions.
This case study highlights how power analysis was used across two separate projects to identify power quality issues, improve system performance and deliver long-term operational benefits.
Project Overview
Power analysis formed the basis of all decisions, allowing Micron Group to accurately diagnose issues before implementing targeted solutions.
- Commercial building infrastructure
- Multiple electrical systems including switchboards, mechanical plant and fire services
- Investigation of performance issues and inefficiencies
The Challenge
Across both projects, the client was experiencing issues that were impacting electrical system performance. These included:
- Suspected harmonic distortion within the electrical network
- Poor power factor contributing to inefficiencies
- High inrush currents during equipment start-up
- Increased stress on switchboards and infrastructure
Without detailed monitoring, these issues could not be accurately diagnosed or resolved.
Power Analysis Approach
Micron Group deployed advanced monitoring equipment to key switchboards and electrical systems as part of our power analysis services in Sydney. Data was captured over a defined period to assess real operating conditions.
The analysis focused on:
- Voltage stability and phase balance
- Current behaviour and load profiles
- Harmonic distortion levels
- Power factor performance
- Inrush current during equipment start-up
This data provided a clear understanding of system performance and allowed accurate identification of underlying issues.
Key Findings
1. Harmonic Distortion and Power Quality Issues
Analysis identified elevated harmonic levels caused by non-linear loads within the building. These harmonics were contributing to inefficiencies and increased stress on electrical infrastructure. Learn more about harmonic distortion in commercial buildings.
2. Poor Power Factor
Reactive power demand was impacting overall system efficiency and contributing to unnecessary energy costs.
3. High Inrush Currents
Significant current spikes were observed during equipment start-up, placing stress on the electrical system and increasing the risk of faults.
Implemented Solutions
Static VAR Generator Installation
To address harmonic distortion and improve power factor, Micron Group implemented Static VAR Generator (SVG) solutions. These systems provided real-time compensation and improved overall power quality.
Variable Speed Drive Upgrade
In the fire pump application, Danfoss 250kW variable speed drives were installed to control inrush current and improve system performance. This resulted in smoother operation and reduced electrical stress.
Results and Outcomes
- Improved power factor and reduced inefficiencies
- Reduced harmonic distortion levels
- Controlled inrush currents and improved system stability
- Enhanced reliability of electrical infrastructure
- Improved overall system performance
Why Power Analysis Matters
This case study demonstrates the importance of using real-time data to diagnose electrical issues. Without power analysis, these problems may have remained undetected or incorrectly addressed.
By understanding how electrical systems behave under actual operating conditions, Micron Group delivers targeted solutions that improve efficiency, reliability and long-term performance.
