Micron Group delivered a technology-driven façade lighting transformation across the International Towers at Barangaroo, redefining how commercial buildings engage with the city skyline.
This project combined custom smart luminaires, advanced DMX infrastructure, and MADRIX media control to create a fully programmable, event-ready façade lighting system integrated directly into the towers’ existing building management systems.
The Brief
The objective was to transform the towers into a dynamic skyline asset capable of:
- Full-building colour control
- Event-based lighting for Vivid, NYE and awareness campaigns
- Pixel-mapped dynamic lighting effects
- Seamless KNX and BMS integration
- Energy-efficient operation with zoned control
The system had to remain architecturally discreet by day while delivering extraordinary impact at night.
Custom Smart Lighting Solution
No off-the-shelf fitting met the performance and integration requirements.
Micron Group developed a customised intelligent luminaire engineered specifically for the tower balconies. The fittings were:
- IP-rated for marine exposure
- Designed with precision lensing to eliminate light bleed and scalloping
- Capable of vivid RGB colour and true warm white output
- Built with high refresh rates for flicker-free broadcast performance
- Fully pixel-addressable for façade-wide synchronisation
Over 18 months of testing ensured a perfect fit for the building geometry and control infrastructure.

DMX & MADRIX Control Architecture
The lighting system was built on a high-bandwidth DMX backbone and programmed using MADRIX media control software, enabling:
- Dynamic façade lighting shows
- Real-time scripted transitions
- Audio-reactive lighting integration
- Full pixel mapping across multiple levels
- Future-ready media façade expansion
Micron Group coded and integrated all control protocols to ensure seamless triggering via the existing Building Management System.
