Micron Group delivered the advanced DMX and MADRIX architectural lighting control system at Scape Tower Redfern, the iconic Sydney headquarters building for Scape. The installation provides precise control of the building’s dynamic façade lighting, enabling programmable scenes, colour transitions and time-based lighting sequences across the architectural lighting infrastructure.
Architectural Lighting Activation – Scape Tower Redfern
Micron Group was engaged to deliver a high-impact architectural lighting solution for Scape Tower in Redfern, with the objective of activating the building and establishing a distinctive night-time presence visible across the surrounding cityscape. Positioned within a key sightline when looking south toward the rapidly evolving Redfern precinct, the tower presented an opportunity to create a strong architectural statement within the Sydney skyline.
The project presented a significant technical challenge. The building rises approximately 15 levels, yet the available installation footprint permitted the installation of only three luminaires. Achieving meaningful architectural illumination across a structure of this scale with such a limited number of fittings required careful engineering, precision optics, and strategic placement.
Engineering the Lighting Solution
To overcome these constraints, Micron Group designed a lighting strategy focused on maximum optical efficiency and precision beam control. High-output, energy-efficient architectural luminaires were selected and paired with specialised asymmetric lensing, allowing the light to be projected accurately across the full height of the tower façade.
The system was engineered in collaboration with Modaluce, who supplied the fittings and custom fabricated mounting bracketry designed specifically for the constrained installation footprint. The bespoke bracketry allowed the luminaires to be precisely aligned, enabling the asymmetric optics to project light effectively across the building surface while maintaining clean beam control and minimising spill.
Through careful modelling of throw distances, beam spread and mounting angles, Micron engineers were able to achieve consistent façade illumination using only three strategically positioned luminaires. The result is a powerful yet efficient architectural lighting installation capable of projecting vibrant colour across the tower and defining it as a recognisable element within the skyline.
Advanced Lighting Control and Integration
Beyond the physical lighting design, the project incorporated a sophisticated control architecture. Micron Group integrated the lighting system with the building’s in-house Building Management System (BMS), enabling coordinated control across the building network.
Using MADRIX lighting control technology, Micron engineers implemented a flexible multi-protocol control environment capable of managing complex lighting scenes and dynamic colour transitions. The integration allows both local and remote control of the system, providing the building management team with the ability to easily activate lighting sequences for events, celebrations and building activations.
MADRIX’s powerful control capabilities allow the façade lighting to be programmed with scheduled scenes, colour effects and timed activations, ensuring the system remains adaptable as the building continues to engage with the surrounding community and city environment.
Creating a Distinctive Presence in the Sydney Skyline
Despite the minimal hardware footprint, the completed installation delivers a striking architectural result. Through careful engineering, advanced optics and intelligent control integration, the tower is now capable of commanding attention within the surrounding skyline.
The lighting installation transforms the building into a dynamic architectural feature at night, activating the façade with colour and giving the structure a strong visual identity visible from multiple vantage points across the city.
