Micron Group Electrical PFC VAR Generator Project

VAR Generator PFC Installation

Pfc Var Generator Installation and Commissioning Scape Sydney

Micron Group recently installed two variable Var PFC Generators to the main electrical switch room at Scape’s flagship headquarters, Everleigh St Redfern, to improve the buildings electrical power system. The goal of this installation was to improve the power factor from 0.75 to unity and to decrease total harmonic distortion from over 55% to under 8% on all three phases, while providing automatic load balance.

The Design
The scope of work involved the engineering, design, and integration of two PFC VAR generators and harmonic filters. To support the new equipment, Micron Group altered the existing switchboard by installing new 400-amp circuit breakers and support structures. The installation was carried out by qualified technicians who worked closely with the client to ensure that the project was completed within the required timeframe and budget.

The Installation
With over two tons of equipment to commission, the installation process started with the removal of the old electrical system, and the installation of new circuits, new var generators, and associated switchboard equipment. The var generators were designed to provide a more stable and efficient power supply within the building, greatly improving the quality of the electricity supplied to the site. The PFC var generators were connected to the main switchboards, MSB1 and MSB2, to monitor, control and improve the power supply within the building.

In addition to the installation of the new var generators, Micron Group also installed new mains cable circuits and current transformers (CT’s) to improve the power system. The (CT’s) were integrated into the main switchboard busway MSB1 and MSB2, to accurately monitor the current flow from the grid to the building and ensure that the power supply was stable and efficient.

Technicians also ensured that all safety regulations were followed, and the installation was compliant to the relevant electrical standards.

The Result
The installation of the new equipment resulted in an improvement in the power factor from 0.75 to 0.99 and a reduction in harmonic distortion from over 55% to 2.3% on all three phases. This ensured that the electrical system at Scape Everleigh St Redfern was operating at its optimal level, providing reliable and efficient power to the building.
